Many couples feel nervous in front of the camera, especially if they have never had professional photos taken before. It’s completely normal to wonder how you will look in photos or whether you will know how to pose. As a wedding photographer working in the UK, I meet many couples who tell me they feel a bit awkward or unsure at the beginning of a photoshoot. This is completely normal, and in most cases it only takes a few minutes for people to relax and start enjoying the moment. The good news is that you don’t need to be a model to have beautiful wedding photos. In this article I’ll share five simple tips that will help you feel more confident, look natural and enjoy your day while your photographer captures genuine moments.
1. Simple poses work best
Most couples don’t get married every day or have professional photos taken often, so it’s completely normal to feel a bit nervous about how you’ll look in photos.
To help couples relax and feel comfortable, I always start with very simple poses. I might ask you to walk together, hold hands or just talk to each other. This helps create a natural atmosphere, which is exactly what we want.
A good photographer will gradually guide you into more structured compositions, so you don’t need to do anything complicated or unnatural.
The simpler the pose, the more natural you will look. Your photographer will take care of the composition, light and background so you get beautiful results.
I’ve noticed over the years that the best photographs happen when couples are simply being themselves.
I always help my couples with posing, so you don’t need to worry if you’ve never had a photoshoot before.
2. Don’t hide your emotions
Never, really never, hide your emotions.
During the morning preparations you might feel focused or a little nervous — those are real emotions.During the ceremony you might laugh or cry — and those moments are incredibly meaningful. After the ceremony, when you feel happy and relieved, those smiles and looks create wonderful photographs.
Even when you pose with a serious or thoughtful expression, your eyes tell the story, and that always shows in photos.
When you look back at your wedding photos years later, it’s the genuine emotions that will mean the most to you.
3. How to look relaxed in photos
Everyone feels nervous on their wedding day — and that’s completely normal.
If you feel tense during photos, a few simple things can help:
take a few deep breaths
relax your shoulders
don’t rush
stand comfortably and keep a natural posture
Sometimes the easiest way to relax is to start with group photos with family and friends, and then move on to portraits.
4. What to do with your hands
This is one of the most common questions couples ask 🙂
The answer is simple:
hold hands
hug each other
adjust your hair or dress
hold your bouquet
During the day this usually stops feeling awkward very quickly, so there’s no need to worry about it.
5. Trust your photographer
You chose your photographer because you liked their work, so the best thing you can do is trust them.
Try not to think about the camera too much and just enjoy your day. Your photographer will guide you if something needs adjusting or if there’s a better way to stand.
If you have ideas for photos or know you prefer one side of your face, just let your photographer know. Communication always helps create better results.
It’s also helpful to keep your photographer informed about the schedule so important moments aren’t missed.
You don’t need to be a model to have beautiful photos. Just be yourselves, enjoy your day, and your photographer will take care of the rest. If you’re planning your wedding and looking for a photographer, I’d be happy to help capture your day in a natural and relaxed way.
