Why Cheap Wedding Photography Can Cost You More – Advice from a Professional Wedding Photographer in UK

Advice from a Professional Wedding Photographer That No One Asked For 🙂

This post is for couples who are considering hiring a non-professional photographer for their wedding, and I’d like to explain why that might not be the best idea.

I often see posts from couples looking for beginner photographers or photographers with extremely low budgets. Later, those same couples ask professional photographers to help edit or fix their wedding photos. Unfortunately, in 95% of cases those photos simply cannot be saved.

I completely understand that planning a wedding requires a lot of time, energy and money. Couples spend thousands on a beautiful venue, buy stunning dresses and suits, hire professional makeup artists and hairstylists… and then hire a photographer who simply isn't able to capture the atmosphere of their big day.

So ask yourself a simple question:

Is saving £500 really worth it when your wedding budget is £10,000+, if that saving means choosing an amateur instead of a professional photographer?

Let’s look at some of the key differences between professional photographers and amateurs.

Experience

✅A professional photographer knows how to compose a shot, how to work with light, and how to capture genuine moments naturally.

⛔An amateur often just presses the shutter button hundreds of times, hoping that at least one photo will turn out well.

Equipment

✅Professional photographers use reliable professional equipment and know how to work with it in any situation — dark venues, bright sunlight, fast-moving moments, or unexpected weather.

⛔Amateurs often rely on automatic camera settings and basic equipment.

This is why you sometimes see posts online like:

"My photographer blocked me and never delivered our photos."or"How can I recover photos from a broken SD card?"

Photo Editing

✅A professional photographer spends many hours editing, carefully adjusting colours, lighting and details to create a consistent and beautiful gallery.

⛔An amateur might simply apply an automatic preset in Lightroom, and you might be lucky if the photos are even straightened.

And honestly, this comparison could go on for a very long time.

Your wedding day will fly by incredibly quickly. The next morning, you’ll want to relive those beautiful memories.

But the memories you felt on the day and what you see in poorly captured photos can be very different things.

A Real Story From My Own Experience

When I first started working as a wedding photographer in the UK, I didn’t yet have my own clients.

One day I saw a post from a photographer who needed someone to cover a wedding because he couldn’t attend due to personal reasons.

I agreed to help.

After that wedding, he asked me to cover several more for him. In total, I photographed nine weddings for him.

Then the nightmare began.

He never paid me, and as a result I didn’t send him the photos. Couples started contacting me directly because he completely ignored their messages.

Later I discovered that I wasn’t the only photographer — there were at least three of us working weddings for him.

For more than six months, couples were trying to get their photos while I was trying to get paid for my work.

One couple has been waiting almost a year and is now preparing documents for small claims court.

Do you know what all those couples had in common?

They decided to save about £500 on their photographer.

Instead of hiring a professional, they hired someone who turned out to be a scammer.

Your Wedding Photos Are Your Memories

When planning a wedding, it’s important to understand that a photographer’s job is not just to “take a few photos.”

Your photographer captures the entire story of your day — from the morning preparations to the evening celebration.

Hiring a professional photographer isn’t only about getting beautiful photos.

It’s also about protecting yourself from stress, disappointment, and uncertainty.

Remember:

You can always earn more money, but you cannot recreate your wedding day.
